Community Care celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. When
older adults became weak or frail a generation ago, many were
destined to spend the rest of their lives in nursing homes. Torn
from their homes and communities, they suffered silently, out
of view.
Community Care founder Kirby Shoaf envisioned a different kind
of long-term care, one that integrated health, home and community-based
services that supported people living in their own homes and communities.
He launched Community Care in 1977. Today Community Care serves
adults with disabilities as well as frail, older adults.
When Community Care opened our new Adult Day Health Center and
offices on 32nd and Vliet Street, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Editorial Board took notice. On June 15, they wrote:
Community Care has brought its vision of health support for older
people to Milwaukee’s near west side. The non-profit agency
has taken over the building that Industries for the Blind once occupied
at 3220 W. Vliet St. The facility now features a clinic, rehabilitation
gym, dentist’s office, pharmacy and social and recreational
center. The idea is to give the frail elderly support so they won’t
have to go into nursing homes. It was sorely needed in that part
of town. |
